Government websites are often associated with outdated designs, complex navigation, and difficult-to-find information. When San Diego LAFCO partnered with Chase Design, the goal wasn’t simply to refresh the visuals, it was to create a modern identity and digital experience that better reflects the organization’s mission while making information easier to access.
After previously collaborating with several California LAFCO agencies, San Diego LAFCO once again turned to Chase Design to evolve its brand and online presence.
A Logo Designed for Scalability
The original logo had served the agency well for many years, but its detailed illustration made it difficult to reproduce consistently across digital and print applications. Our objective was to create a simplified, versatile mark while preserving the recognizable identity of San Diego County.
The redesigned logo incorporates several iconic regional elements:
- The San Diego coastline and ocean waves
- The downtown skyline
- Palomar Mountain
- A signature palm tree
- A vibrant color palette inspired by Southern California
The result is a cleaner, more scalable logo that works equally well on websites, social media, signage, printed materials, apparel, and promotional items.

Bringing the Brand to Life Online
Once the new brand identity was complete, San Diego LAFCO asked us to redesign their website. Rather than creating a generic government website, we wanted the digital experience to feel distinctly San Diego.
Throughout the website, we incorporated visual elements inspired by the new logo, including:
- Coastal wave shapes
- Mountain silhouettes
- Bright Southern California colors
- Skyline-inspired imagery
- Rounded organic design elements
- Modern typography
- Clean spacing and visual hierarchy
These elements work together to create a website that feels approachable, memorable, and unmistakably connected to San Diego.

Designed Around User Experience
Government websites exist to provide information quickly and efficiently. Every design decision was made with user experience in mind.
Some of the improvements include:
- Simplified navigation
- Clearer page hierarchy
- Better organization of meetings, notices, and forms
- Improved accessibility and readability
- Faster access to frequently used resources
Instead of overwhelming users with dense information, the new design guides users naturally toward the content they’re looking for.

A Website That Doesn’t Feel Like a Government Website
One of our biggest goals was to challenge the expectation that government websites need to feel cold or outdated.
The redesigned San Diego LAFCO website demonstrates that public agencies can maintain professionalism while delivering an engaging, visually compelling experience that reflects the communities they serve.
The result is a website that is:
- Modern
- Accessible
- User-friendly
- Brand-focused
- Built for long-term growth
